Economics of Education: Course Description
Human capital plays an important role in any economy, and education is one way society can improve the returns on the investments represented by that capital. 'Economics of Education' uses econometrics, institutional readings and applications of economic theory to examine the economic ramifications of some current issues in education. This Urban Studies and Planning course was taught by Professor Frank Levy. Specifically, the course can bring students through a presentation of the theory of human capital, the labor market teachers face and education's impact on wages and on wage inequality. This economics course also examines the likelihood that mid-career adult education will have a significant impact. The course was under the umbrella of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the Department of Economics. The recommended prerequisites - 'Principles of Microeconomics' and 'Introduction to Statistical Method in Economics' - are both available through OpenCourseWare. Further topics include such modern-day questions as the effect of school choice, the use of technology in the education of children in grades K-12, and the impact of college financial aid.
The lecture notes, recommended reading list, assignments and exams are all available online. If you'd like to take this course, visit the education economics course page.
