Compound Semiconductor Devices OpenCourseWare: A Free Online Graduate Study Course by MIT on Electronic Device Engineering
'Compound Semiconductor Devices' is a free OpenCourseware offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This course semiconductors built from elements in two or more areas of the periodic table. They therefore having divergent properties, are crucial in certain lasers, some high-resolution systems and advanced optoelectronics. This course is aimed at graduate students and professionals experienced at working with semiconductor technologies. This course is best taken after studying applied quantum physics and integrated microelectronic devices.

Compound Semiconductor Devices: Course Description
Beginning with an overview of the families of compound semiconductors and their alloys and band structures, you'll move on to crystal lattices, optical and electrical properties, trends in properties and the periodic table. After that you'll review the useful compounds, and that's just the first lecture! From here you'll go on to look at the interfaces, barriers and theories of current flow, heterostructures, heterojunctions and quantum effect structures. Now you move into the theory and application of MESFETs, microwave linear ICs, HFETs and HBTs. You will also study dielectric waveguides and photonic crystals, LEDs, laser diodes, modulators and various types of circuits in this information-packed course. Professor Clifton Fonstad Jr. does not assign a text, but does recommend several journal articles and books.
The course includes notes on most lectures, three assignments with solutions and six student final papers and presentations. To learn more, visit the compound semi-conductor devices course page.
