Chemical Engineering (Biocatalysis) OpenCourseWare: A Free Bachelor Level Chemical Engineering Course by MIT on the Study of Biocatalysis
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers its 'Integrated Chemical Engineering Topics I: Introduction to Biocatalysis' course as free OpenCourseWare. Students earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biological-Chemical Engineering can enroll in this elective course. The course teaches students when biocatalysis (the use of organic catalysts to produce chemical transformations) is used in chemical engineering and how it is conducted.

Integrated Chemical Engineering Topics I (Introduction to Biocatalysis): Course Description
Dr. Kristala L. Jones Prather was the professor for the 'Integrated Chemical Engineering Topics I: Introduction to Biocatalysis' lecture course in MIT's Chemical Engineering Department. This undergraduate biocatalysis course is for B.S. candidates in Chemical Engineering and Biological-Chemical Engineering. 'Integrated Chemical Engineering Topics I: Introduction to Biocatalysis' emphasizes the use of biocatalysis in process design. In addition to learning why and how biocatalysis is used by chemical engineers, students also learn when whole cells should be used for biocatalysis and when free enzymes are preferred. Later in the course, the design and development of processes for bioconversion are explored.
This OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes, problem set assignments and project guidelines. If you're interested in this online course, visit the biocatalysis course page.
