Analyzing Projects and Organizations: Course Description
Often students find that the theories and practices they learned while studying don't always translate perfectly when they begin work in seemingly chaotic organizations. Students who study planning and research strategies often become overwhelmed by the reality of how organizations work in real life. This OpenCourseWare, offered by MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning, discusses the realities of organizations with an in-depth look at planning models, organizational structures, the impact of regulation on providing services and an overview of organizational behavior. Students will learn the role that politicians play to both help and hurt the delivery of services to local communities while taking a closer look at the complexities and advantages of inter-agency collaboration. This course will also look at the differences between rich and poor communities and how wealth impacts service delivery. These course materials were used in an MIT class that was led by Professor Judith Tendler in 2008.
A reading list, example student assignments and assignment instructions are available online for free. If you are interested in learning more about project analysis and how organizations are run in an unpredictable real-life environment, visit the organization and project analysis course page.
