The Neural Basis of Object Recognition in Monkeys and Humans: Course Description
The Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers OpenCourseWare that explores the cognitive functions of the human and primate brains. Students explore the use of the visual cortex and mapping areas of the brain used for object recognition and perception. Using fMRIs, students learn to interpret signals to recognize complex patterns in visual comprehension. The class compares the visual processing of the human brain and the monkey brain using magnetic resonance imaging. Students use this data to analyze the shape, features, curvature and non-accidental properties of the brain's visual interpretations. Students explore how the brain adapts what the eye sees to maximize what it can interpret. Study also includes how the brain re-codes retinal images to determine position and scale, illumination, pose and object recognition. Cognitive science professors Dr. James DiCarlo and Dr. Nancy Kanwisher teach this course.
This OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, required readings list and assignment instructions. Those interested in this free course should visit the Neural Basis of Object Recognition in Monkeys and Humans course page.
