Molecular Biogeochemistry: Course Description

A biosignature is a marker that indicates the presence of life. MIT's 'Molecular Biogeochemistry' OpenCourseWare explores molecules that indicate specific biosignatures, including fatty acids, lipid chains and similar chemical markers that are unique to particular organisms. The information scientists obtain from molecular biosignatures in the geological record can help them determine the nature of bacteria and other life forms. Students learn about the many characteristics of molecular biosignatures in modern organisms and environments, from lipid biosynthesis to molecular fossils to the occurrence of molecular biosignatures. This graduate-level course is taught by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Roger Summons.
