Labor and Politics: Course Description

The Department of Political Science at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers a doctoral course that analyzes the costs and benefits of labor developments, such as liberalization, globalization, privatization and related advancements on labor. This course explores how globalization and other developments have promoted foreign investment, job creation and industrialization in poorer countries. Conversely, students explore how economic liberalization has compromised social safety nets, labor standards and the environment. These policies will be explored by country and circumstance where they lead to prosperity or increase poverty. The course's ultimate goal is to help students pursue independent research on this and related topics. Political science professor Dr. Richard Locke teaches this course. Participation requires an Internet connection and access to the required readings.
