Introduction to Phonology: Course Description

The Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT in Cambridge, MA, offers this OpenCourseWare, which focuses on the actual sounds of language. This phonology course scrutinizes the importance of intonations, accents and stresses placed upon a specific syllable. It offers a method outside of semantics and pragmatics to interpret the meaning of a sentence. After covering the basics of phonology, students compare the utility of phonetics with syntax in understanding the complexities of language. Linguistics professors Dr. Michael Kenstowicz, Dr. Donca Steriade and Dr. Cheryl Zoll teach this course. Taking this graduate phonology course requires a thorough understanding of syntax, semantics and other linguistic principles.

This OpenCourseWare includes a syllabus, list of recommended readings, lecture notes, assignments and an all-inclusive download of the course material. Those interested in this free course should visit the introductory Phonology course page.
