University of West Georgia Review
The University of West Georgia (UWG) is located in Carrollton, GA, about 50 miles west of Atlanta. In addition to its three regular colleges, UWG is home to the state's only Honors College.
University of West Georgia Overview
The University of West Georgia was founded in 1906 as the Fourth District Agricultural School. Its initial purpose was to meet the demand for a realistic education for rural youth. By 1957, however, the school had expanded its curriculum and was granted university status, eventually growing to a student enrollment of over 10,000 per year.
The University of West Georgia ranks as a Best Southeastern College by Princeton Review. The university's psychology department has one of only two state programs in the nation to offer psychology with a human science emphasis. Approximately 100 other programs are also offered by UWG.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
Students can apply for admission to the University of West Georgia using the online applications on the school's admissions website. In addition to the application, students must submit an application fee, high school transcripts and standardized test scores. If accepted, students must then submit financial aid paperwork, immunization records, a student health form and a housing application.
Campus Facilities and Learning Environment
The University of West Georgia Libraries contain over 500,000 volumes, as well as articles, periodicals and electronic resources. The Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library is home to the Annie Belle Weaver Special Collections, which has amassed numerous articles, photographs and oral interviews, particularly those specific to the history of Georgia. UWG has four computer labs for student use, with both PCs and Macs available. The library hosts specific facilities and equipment available for certain programs, such as the psychology department's Biofeedback Laboratory.
The student-to-faculty ratio at UWG is 18:1. In addition to its onsite lecture classes, the university has one of the largest online distance-learning programs in the state, with almost 5,000 students enrolled. Through online learning, students can complete most of their general education requirements, or earn degrees and certificates in fields such as instructional technology, business and nursing.
