Located a few blocks from the Gulf of Mexico, the University of South Alabama is only minutes away from Mobile's central business district and historic coastline. The university offers certification, undergraduate, graduate, and health pre-professional programs in a broad range of fields, including medicine, veterinary science, engineering and information technology.
University of South Alabama Overview
The University of South Alabama was established in 1963 and is the only public university in the upper Gulf Coast region. The school's 14,757 students come from all over the United States and 90 different countries around the world. In addition to its Mobile campus, South Alabama also has locations in Brookley, Springhill and Baldwin County, Alabama.
The university consists of 10 colleges and schools, teaching hospitals, the Mitchell Cancer Institute and the Technology and Research Park. South Alabama has hundreds of majors in a variety of disciplines and offers certification, bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree programs. The school's healthcare program has produced over 7,000 nurses and one-third of the physicians working in the Mobile area.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
The University of South Alabama requires incoming freshmen to have a high school diploma or a minimum GED score of 500, a high school GPA of 2.00 or higher and take an ACT or SAT exam. Students are also required to complete 16 units of core high school courses before university admission.
The majority of University of South Alabama students use a combination of student loans, grants and scholarships to pay their tuition. The school offers freshmen a variety of academic achievement scholarships, including the Presidential Scholarships and the University of South Alabama Honors Program Scholarships.
Campus Facilities and Learning Environment
South Alabama's libraries consist of five main branches, the University Library, the Biomedical Library, the University Archives, the Baldwin County Library and the Mitchell School of Business Library. Students also have full internet access to Google Scholar, WorldCat databases and Net Library's e-books. On-campus facilities include research labs, medical clinics, a teaching hospital and computer labs.
At the University of South Alabama there is one faculty member for every 22 students, and more than half of faculty members have terminal degrees in their fields. The majority of classes are held on-campus or in one of the school's medical centers located throughout the city of Mobile. The school's Adult Degree program has weeknight and weekend classes, which are designed for working students.
