University of Illinois Overview

Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois (U of I) has since established itself as one of Illinois' best public universities. In addition to U of I's flagship Urbana-Champaign campus and the Chicago and Springfield campuses, the university also operates an online global campus.

University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) is the largest university in Chicago and offers degrees in academic areas such as urban planning, public health and medicine. The Springfield campus (UIS) has the lowest student-faculty ratio in the U of I system and has a student population of approximately 5,000.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is ranked by U.S. News and World Report College Guide as one of 2010's top ten public national universities and is classified as highly selective. Applicants apply directly to a program or major, where the department admission committee review applications. Two essays discussing academic interests and extracurricular activities are typically required for freshmen applicants.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's library is part of one of the largest library systems in the world, with over 11 million volumes and 22 million items. Departmental and school libraries are spread out at 40 locations across the university campus. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has 70,000 computer and over 130 buildings with wireless connection to the university network.

Students complete their lecture and lab courses in the 559 campus buildings. The student-faculty ratio is 17:1. Veterinary, writing resources, research, clinical sciences and other departmental labs are also located on the campus.
