University of Central Missouri Review
A town of about 17,000 people, Warrensburg, Missouri, is home to the 1,561-acre campus of the University of Central Missouri. The university has 150 majors that lead to degrees on all levels from certificates and associate degrees to cooperative doctorates. Study programs range from accountancy to vocational family and consumer sciences and from tourism to agricultural technology.
University of Central Missouri Overview
In 1871, the State Normal School No. 2 was founded. After four name changes, the school became the University of Central Missouri in 2006.
There are numerous labs on the campus, including computer labs. A laboratory of networked PCs supports the computer science and mathematics programs. Aspiring mathematicians might find it interesting to note that this network has allowed the university to participate in the 'Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search,' and to have the only team to discover two Mersenne primes.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
The University of Central Missouri's website contains a list of things for a high school student to do to prepare for university admission. The student will need to have finished a college-prep curriculum of 24 units as defined by Missouri. Additionally, either a score of 21 or higher on the ACT plus a GPA of 2.0 or a score of 990 on the SAT I plus a GPA of 2.0 is required. Students can also determine eligibility for admission by using the Combined Percentile Index (CPI), which allows exceptions to the admissions criteria by weighing class rank against test scores. The university urges all applicants to visit the campus, look into the Honors College and investigate financial aid.
Campus Facilities and Learning Environment
In 2008, the university increased the number of electronic classrooms and computer labs by 46%, bringing the number of classrooms that have access to wireless networks to 98%. The James C. Kirkpatrick Library holds over two million items, many of them sitting on over 20 miles of shelves.
With the university's goal of having a small-college atmosphere, the average undergraduate class size is 23 students. This goal is aided further by the 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
