The Art Institutes Review

At the Art Institutes, potential majors are drawn from the fields of media arts, design, culinary studies, fashion or event planning. This system has art school campuses in more than 20 U.S. states and even in Canada, offering programs from certificates to master's degrees.

The Art Institutes Overview

The Art Institutes is a private for-profit art school system that awards associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, diplomas and certificates. Some of the most widely available degree programs at the Art Institutes are web design and interactive media, graphic design, media arts and animation, interior design, culinary arts and culinary management. Also offered at many campuses are programs in fashion and retail management, advertising and fashion design.

Students interested in the Art Institutes can choose from campuses in 43 cities or even study online. The campuses are located all over the United States, and there's even one in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Admissions and Enrollment

Admission to an Art Institutes school begins with an interview, whether via telephone or face-to-face. Students must be high school graduates or GED holders, and they need to provide their official academic records, such as transcripts. Next come an admissions essay, application, assessment test scores and a fee. Students must meet English proficiency requirements. Scholarship competitions, including some targeted to specific degree programs, are available.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

The various campuses of the Art Institutes have on-site resources to support students. For example, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh has a library offering 200 magazines, 25,000 books, online databases and research guides. Some Art Institutes campuses open student-run restaurants to the public, including Opus Too in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Portfolio Restaurant in Seattle, Washington. The Art Institute of New York City has computer labs for students' use and technical equipment for rent. Its library, including tailored collections for the artistic and culinary fields, is shared with Metropolitan College.

Many programs at the Art Institutes involve hands-on work in studio courses or lab courses, including culinary kitchen labs. Lots of coursework in many fields is done on computers with animation or design software. Some majors require students to work with professors to compile a professional-level portfolio presentation of their work. Online learning is available as a primary degree delivery method or in combination with traditional courses. Some programs offer evening and weekend instruction. Students may even be able to study abroad.
