Texas Christian University Overview

In 1873, one of the first coeducational higher education institutes west of the Mississippi River was AddRan College; at the time, only 15% of college enrollment nationally was comprised of women, most of whom attended women's colleges. This college became Texas Christian University (TCU) in 1902. The university is associated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and considers both reason and faith the foundation for education.

More than 75 organizations give research funding to Texas Christian University since it is a major research and teaching university. The university houses one of the top three drug-related research institutes in the nation, TCU's Institute of Behavioral Research; for decades it has heavily influenced U.S. drug policy and treatment, and it's now doing the same in the United Kingdom.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

A prospective freshman student applying to Texas Christian University needs to submit a completed admissions application, non-refundable application fee, resume of high school activities and counselor evaluation, as well as ACT or SAT scores, an official high school transcript and essay on one of four topics. For admission purposes, providing a teacher evaluation is optional, but it is required if the student wants to be considered for a scholarship.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

Thousands of electronic, full-text databases, journals and books supplement the two million plus physical items that are housed in the Mary Couts Burnett Library. In 2009, more than 1600 new titles were added to the American History in Video portion of the library. The library houses a number of collections, as diverse as the Archives of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and Amon G. Carter Papers.

Classes with no more than nine students comprise 20% of the classes at Texas Christian University, which helps foster close relationships between students and faculty; another 50% of the classes have 10-29 enrollees. Another factor that aids in faculty-student mentoring relationships is the 14:1 student-faculty ratio.
