St. John's University Review

St. John's University is a private, Roman Catholic school with three residential campuses in New York City and graduate centers in Upstate New York and Italy. Students can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 100 academic areas, including the arts, education, health, business and the sciences.

St. John's University Overview

St. John's University was founded in 1870 when the first Bishop of Brooklyn requested the city's youth be provided an intellectual and moral education. Nearly 140 years later, St. John's serves 14,983 undergraduates and 5,086 graduate students on five campuses. The university's six schools and colleges award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in more than 100 academic and career fields, such as business administration, sport management, criminal justice, computer science and journalism.

St. John's University also offers distance learning undergraduate degree programs in business, criminal justice, liberal studies and administrative studies. It provides the only online educational administration graduate program in school building leadership and school district leadership approved by New York State.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

Admission to St. John's is based on academic standings, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation and a student's individual interests, enthusiasm and potential. Prospective students can apply through the mail or online. Approximately 95% of St. John's students received financial aid through scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs. Students accepted to and enrolled in St. John's can check the status of financial aid requests by logging on to the university's information system.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

Students at St. John's three New York City campuses have access to the diverse cultural and commercial resources of one of the world's greatest cities. On campus, student at St. John's can participate in more than 180 student clubs and organizations, as well as 17 Division I athletic teams. Students also have an opportunity to enroll in global studies programs in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe or the Galapagos Islands.

There is a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio at St. John's. The university's library collection encompasses more than 1.5 million items, including books, periodicals, microfiche, microfilm and audiovisual materials. Its innovative laptop program, run by the school's information technology majors, provides wireless computers to all new students.
