Southern Illinois University Overview
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale received its charter in 1869, and the Edwardsville campus was established in 1957. The Southern Illinois University System has five total campuses, including the School of Medicine in Springfield, School of Dental Medicine in Alton and an additional campus in East St. Louis. Southern Illinois University's Carbondale campus offers nationally ranked programs in aviation and finance; it is also home to the only public mortuary science and funeral service program in Illinois. The Edwardsville campus is known for its dental, engineering and pharmacy programs. Southern Illinois University enrolls 35,000 students each year in two associate, 124 bachelor's, 113 master's and 37 doctoral or professional degree programs.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
Applications are accepted separately for programs at each campus location. Online applications are preferred. Applicants typically submit transcripts and ACT or SAT scores for freshman admission; graduate admission requirements vary by program. Certain programs, such as aviation flight and dental hygiene, may require additional application materials while others for interior design, architectural studies and radiologic sciences restrict new student enrollment to fall semester only. Competitive scholarships are available through Southern Illinois University. Almost 75% of the students at Edwardsville and more than 80% of the students at Carbondale receive financial aid.
Campus Facilities and Learning Environment
Southern Illinois University's Edwardsville campus has a student-teacher ratio of 18:1. Nursing students are each paired with a faculty mentor, and have access to dedicated nursing labs. The dental program operates clinics in both Alton and East St. Louis. The school also hosts a technology park: University Park SIUE, Inc.
Southern Illinois University's Carbondale campus has a student-teacher ratio of 27:1. The school's university, law and medical libraries total more than 8 million resources. The school's research facilities include a genomics and robotics lab and a mass spectrometry lab. Early Childhood majors can participate in Child Development Laboratories. The School of Social Work is home to the Human Rights Center. The cinema and photography program hosts four labs for hands-on work, plus a photography studio and a cinema sound stage. These are just an overview of the school's unique campus attributes.
