Southeastern Louisiana University Review

Southeastern Louisiana University is located in Hammond, LA, about 56 miles north of New Orleans. Southeastern offers four associate degrees, 53 bachelor's degrees, 20 master's degrees and a doctoral degree in education.

Southeastern Louisiana University Overview

Founded in 1925 as a community college, Southeastern Louisiana University became a 4-year institution in 1938. Of the 15,224 students enrolled at Southeastern in 2008, approximately 60% are female and 40% are male. Nursing, biological sciences, business and management are among the most popular undergraduate degree programs at Southeastern.

KLSU, Southeastern's radio station, and Southeastern Channel, the university's television channel, provide students with extracurricular opportunities as well as practical experience in radio broadcasting and television programming and production. Southeastern Channel has gained national and international recognition by winning numerous awards, including four Emmy awards.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

Southeastern applications are available online. In addition to filling out an online application, applicants must submit a copy of their high school transcripts or GED scores. Completion of the ACT and submission of an official score report is also required.

Students who have demonstrated academic excellence may apply to the Southeastern Scholars Program. Program requirements include a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and a minimum ACT composite score of 24. Program applicants must also submit a letter of recommendation from their high school principal.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

Southeastern's Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Chemistry and Physics provide students with access to several teaching labs and computer labs. A microbiology lab, an herbarium, an animal care facility and a greenhouse are also available. In addition, three computer labs in the College of Business provide hardware and software that can be used for the completion of course assignments and projects. The Sims Memorial Library provides students with access to printed volumes, electronic journals and books and interlibrary loan services.

Unlike many large universities that employ graduate students to teach undergraduate courses, the majority of courses at Southeastern are taught by faculty members. The student-to-faculty ratio in most academic divisions is approximately 28:1, but that ratio is lower for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development, which have student-to-faculty ratios of 13:1 and 18:1, respectively.
