Savannah College of Art and Design Review

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), located in Savannah, Georgia, is one of the country's largest fine arts colleges, offering more degree-granting programs than any other art and design school in the nation. SCAD offers 39 bachelor's degrees, 68 master's degrees and five certificates in fields such as equestrian studies, interactive design and game development, architecture, dramatic writing and teaching.

Savannah College of Art and Design Overview

The Savannah College of Art and Design was founded in 1978 to provide students in southeast Georgia with previously unavailable art education and professional training opportunities. Today, the college offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and professional certificates in arts, fine arts and art education. Among the most popular majors at SCAD are graphic design, film and television, fashion design, animation and photography.

SCAD had been recognized for its efforts in the historic preservation of over 60 downtown Savannah buildings, many of which are located in one of the 21 Southern Gothic town squares. In addition to the main campus in Savannah, SCAD has a second location in Atlanta, a residential study-abroad program in Lacoste, France, and a new location in Hong Kong.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

The Savannah College of Art and Design has a selective admissions policy. Although not required, undergraduate applicants are encouraged to submit portfolios of their work or audition for applicable programs because doing so can positively affect financial aid consideration. Graduate school applicants must submit demonstrate their talents through portfolios, writing samples or auditions in order to be considered for admission. Financial aid includes federal loans and grants, while a large portion of scholarships are provided by organizations outside of SCAD.

Campus Learning Environment and Facilities

The Savannah College of Art and Design's library system includes the Atlanta College of Art Library at the Atlanta location and the Jen Library in Savannah. In addition to periodicals, books, multimedia resources, theses, special collections and visual resources, the Jen Library is home to the school's writing center. SCAD also has 11 galleries and the SCAD Museum of Art on its Savannah campus, four galleries in Atlanta and three galleries in Lacoste, France.

The college employs more than 600 full-time and part-time faculty members and has a student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1. It's programs combine lecture classes, workshops and independent projects. For students who want to further explore their talents, the school offers learning enrichment programs that combine independent study with traditional coursework and study abroad programs. In addition, Savannah College of Art and Design offers 13 degrees through its eLearning program.
