San Jose State University Overview
Originally founded as California State Normal School in 1857, San Jose State (SJSU) established the country's first criminal justice degree program in 1930. SJSU and the city of San Jose opened a joint library in 2003, which was awarded 'Library of the Year' by Library Journal in 2004. Today, the university offers degree programs in over 130 academic fields of study and is classified as a tier one college by U.S. News and World Report.
SJSU is the only university in the California State University system to offer undergraduate and graduate nuclear science programs. The university is home to the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies, the only research facility of its kind in the country. In 2005, SJSU opened its new Campus Village residence hall that houses a number of the university's approximately 30,000 students.
Admission and Enrollment Overview
SJSU is currently an 'impacted campus', meaning the university receives more applications than they have space for; the eligibility requirements are the minimum standard for admission consideration. The university website includes a minimum eligibility index, list of impacted majors and additional admission information. SJSU's student services center provides enrollment and housing information for prospective freshmen, transfer, pre-professional studies, international and graduate students.
Campus Facilities and Learning Environment
The university library offers a print, electronic and audio book catalog, as well as interlibrary, research assistance, disability and distance learning services. The SJSU academic technology department provides a writing center, academic advising, service learning and other student services; equipment rental, including laptops, is also available. Students will also have access to computer workstations located across campus, which are equipped with current operating systems. SJSU's student-faculty ratio is 21:1.
