San Diego State University's approximately 29,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students can choose among 84 bachelor's degree, 75 master's degree and 15 doctoral degree programs. About 85% of undergraduates are full-time students; almost two-thirds of them are female. Approximately half of the university's graduate students study on a full-time basis.

San Diego State University ranks high among U.S. universities with regard to number of degrees conferred to Hispanic students, and is home to student organizations like the Native American Student Alliance and the National Society of Black Engineers.

In addition to art, business administration and communication, other popular majors are criminal justice, nursing and liberal studies. San Diego State University's most highly-regarded undergraduate programs include engineering, business and international business; highly-regarded graduate programs include fine arts, nursing, biology and public affairs.

The school holds NCAA Division I status, owns and operates its own public television and radio station and has been named the most productive research university in its class by Academic Analytics, LLC for three years in a row.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

San Diego State University strongly prefers online applications. School assistance in completing the application is available if necessary. Admission is extremely competitive. Freshmen must take math and English competency tests, although this requirement may be met by SAT, ACT or advanced placement test results. An on-campus residency requirement is enforced for freshmen who do not meet local residence criteria.

Campus Learning Environment and Facilities

San Diego State University's library holds books and electronic materials, including databases, course reserves and online course reserves. The library shares resources with other regional city and university library systems. Remote access to some library resources is available online.

Students have access to specialized facilities according to their areas of study. San Diego State University has three field stations for biology students. School-sponsored art studios include jewelry, woodworking and ceramic, as well as printmaking and photography labs. Astronomy students may have access to the Mount Laguna Observatory. The school's English Department sponsors five journals.

San Diego State University has a student-to-faculty ratio of 26:1. The school's faculty is racially and ethnically diverse, with about one-third of the faculty being non-white.
