Pearl River Community College Overview
Pearl River Community College (PRCC) began in 1908 as Pearl River County Agricultural High School. It became the nation's first state-funded system of agricultural high schools, and it had its first classes on September 8, 1909. It became Mississipp'is first junior college in 1921 when it added freshman college courses to the curriculum. This addition made the high school the first 2-year, public college in Mississippi.
Currently, PRCC has four locations, including the main campus in Poplarville. Additional campuses include Lowery Woodall Advanced Technology Center and Forrest County Center in Hattiesburg and Hancock Center in Waveland.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
To apply at Pearl River Community College, prospective students must fill out applications. Applications are available online or as printed versions. Some students apply for early admission or dual enrollment. Students apply for dual enrollment if they are interested in completing two distinct programs. For certain programs, such as cosmetology or nursing, additional requirements must be met. Students should submit official copies of ACT scores as well as official high school or college transcripts. Once students have been accepted, they receive orientation and housing information.
PRCC offers multiple scholarships, including academic scholarships, service scholarships or foundation scholarships. Students must apply for some scholarships. Students must complete the FAFSA to apply for need-based financial aid.
Campus Learning Environment and Facilities
Pearl River Community College has three libraries, including the Garvin H. Johnston Library, the Forrest County Center Library and the Hancock Center Library. Students can also access books, magazines and journals through online databases. PRCC's library has over 54,000 books. Pearl River also has several media centers and learning labs. The learning labs include over 72 networked computers that have a large variety of software and videos. The media center assists students who need media for class projects. Students can get help with posters, presentation slides or graphics.
Pearl River offers night and weekend classes and courses. Students in online classes must have access to personal computers and be able to work independently. The student-to-faculty ratio at the college is 14:1.
