Northwestern College Overview
Founded in 1902 in a church, Northwestern Bible and Missionary School began with seven students. Many changes were made to the school over the years, but by fall 2009 there were more than 3,000 students in a liberal arts college named Northwestern College. True to its beginnings, the disciplines in the college are all founded upon the Bible and theological studies, along with daily application of spiritual conduct for each individual. The school offers four associate degrees and 50 bachelor's degrees from 13 academic departments along with two master's degrees in organizational leadership and theological studies.
Admissions and Enrollment Overview
Northwestern College, like most others, requires a high school transcript or GED for admission to the school. It also has several other requirements which include biographical information and two essays--one is a description of the student's personal faith experience and the other is on one of three given topics. A personal faith statement must also be signed. Other requirements include a pastor's reference and an academic reference from a guidance counselor, teacher or other qualified adult.
Campus Facilities and Learning Environment
Housing more than 100,000 books, the Berntsen Library also gives access to 17,000-some periodicals, including electronic indexes. It offers access to numerous full-text electronic resources. It also has a growing collection of videos and compact discs, as well as special collections for specific curricula.
The college facilities include a number of science and computer laboratories as well as a photography lab. Almost a quarter of the classes have fewer than ten students, while only 5% have 40 or more students. By ratio, there are only 14 students for each teacher.
