Northwest Missouri State University was founded over one hundred years ago in 1905 and was first conceived as a teacher college for aspiring elementary school educators. It has since been granted university status and currently offers 135 academic majors and 19 pre-professional programs.

Northwest Missouri State offers an environmentally friendly campus and uses natural fuels like wood chips and animal waste to meet 80 percent of its thermal energy needs. The university has been the recipient of four Missouri Quality Awards, the most recent one granted in 2008. Students have 180 student organizations from which to choose, and roughly 14 percent of the student body participates in fraternities and sororities on campus.

Northwest Missouri State University's campus sits on 370 acres of land in Maryville, Missouri, a town with roughly 11,000 inhabitants. The campus is also home to the Missouri State Arboretum, which contains several walking trails and 111 different species of trees.
