Kean University in Union, New Jersey, is one of the state's largest liberal arts institutions. It offers academic programs in a number of fields, such as religion, design, medical technology and recreation administration.

Kean University Overview

Founded as a public school in the 1850s, Kean University had changed its name several times before gaining university status in 1997. The university has developed a liberal arts curriculum and offers 76 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Kean is recognized as the producer of the highest number of teachers in the state of New Jersey. Development for a campus in China is scheduled to begin in 2010 and will enroll approximately 4,000 students.

Kean University has student housing in its six residence halls, and two additional residence halls are planned for the early 2010s. The student population is 13,050 and the university offers 130 campus organizations, 30 sororities and fraternities and a cable television station. The university's athletics teams compete at the NCAA Division III level, with nationally ranking baseball, soccer and women's basketball teams. Kean Stage offers music, theater, dance and lecture series for students and the general public.

Admission and Enrollment Overview

Applicants can locate the university application and admission requirements on the university website. First-year freshmen will need to submit high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, personal records and any additional letters of recommendation. Kean University offers an onsite decision day, where eligible applicants can visit the campus and receive their admissions decision on the same day; applicants will need to submit a reservation request to determine their eligibility.

Campus Learning Environment and Facilities

The Nancy Thompson Library at Kean University houses over 275,000 volumes and 27,000 bound and online periodicals. Students can utilize library resources, such as electronic reserves, special collections, non-print materials and reciprocal borrowing. The library is accessible on campus and off campus by chat, email, phone and via the Kean's library website.

The average class size at the university is 19 students, with university courses taught by over 375 full-time faculty. Computer labs located on the campus each offer 50 computer workstations, each equipped with up-to-date software and networking technology. Kean's Study Abroad department is available for eligible students who are interested in studying in such locations as Barcelona, Venice, Egypt and Australia.
