Georgia Institute of Technology was originally founded as the Georgia School of Technology in 1885. The school was first designed to offer mechanical engineering programs, but its offerings have since expanded to include liberal arts programs as well. Although it now contains 31 different academic departments, the school still offers its strongest programs in the areas of engineering, computing, technology, science and management.
Today, Georgia Institute of Technology offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 20,000 students each year. The institute also provides satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia, France, Ireland, China and Singapore.

The main campus of Georgia Institute of Technology is located right in midtown Atlanta. Several of the school's venues were used to host events during the 1996 Summer Olympics in the city. Georgia Institute of Technology has twice as many male students as female, providing one of the most unbalanced male-to-female student ratios of any public university in the country. However, the ratio is slowly balancing out more and more each year.
