East Tennessee State University (ETSU) was founded in 1911 as East Tennessee State Normal School, a teaching institution. In 1963, it became a state university, awarding baccalaureate and master's degrees. Today, ETSU also offers doctoral programs in education, medicine, nursing, audiology and physical therapy.

More than 13,000 students attend East Tennessee State University. Education is one of the most highly regarded and popular fields of study at ETSU, although the university also has strong health sciences programs. The school offers five online degree options.
