CUNY Hunter College Review

Located in the center of Manhattan, CUNY Hunter College is the City University of New York's largest college. More than 170 different majors are offered at both bachelor's and master's degree levels. Subjects pursued by the most undergraduates are psychology, English literature, mass communication and sociology.

CUNY Hunter College Overview

Hunter College is one of the country's oldest public colleges. The college has a number of formal education outreach programs that include Continuing Education at Hunter College, the International English Language Institute, Hunter College High School and Hunter College Elementary School; these also supply practicum experiences for students.

The Princeton Review and U.S.A. Today, in their publication Best Value Colleges for 2009, named Hunter as the eighth Best Value in public education. CUNY Hunter College was included as one of the best universities or colleges in the U.S. by the Princeton Review in 2010.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

Recommended prerequisites for acceptance at Hunter College include four years each of social studies and English, three of mathematics, two years of laboratory sciences, two of a single foreign language, and one year of performing or visual arts. A GED is an acceptable substitute.

In addition to filling out application forms, freshman applicants must have official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores and GED test scores, if applicable, sent to the university. Application fees must also be submitted. The overall quality of prerequisite courses taken, as well as GPA, ACT or SAT scores, will be the primary considerations for acceptance.

Campus Learning Environment and Facilities

CUNY Hunter College has four libraries. These include the Jacqueline Grennan Wexler Library (Main Library), the Health Professions Library (HPL) on the Brookdale Campus, the School of Social Work Library and the Zabar Art Library. The combined libraries have more than two millions holdings, including books, periodicals, art slides, tapes, scores and videos. More than 44,000 distinct titles may be read electronically. Hunter also has nine primary research centers and institutes that are assiduously doing original research, such as Space-Time System for Monitoring West Nile Virus and Inhibitors of Axonal Regeneration in the Adult Nervous System.

The university's as a student-to-teacher ratio of 15:1, and 16% of classes have fewer than ten students. Almost 65% of undergraduate classes have no more than 29 students.
