Appalachian State occupies a 410 acre campus in downtown Boone, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountain range. The liberal arts college offers programs for 90 undergraduate degrees, 40 master's degrees, eight graduate certificates and one doctorate degree.

Academically strong in the arts and sciences, Appalachian State offers a rich mix of programs in fine arts, education and business, plus interdisciplinary subjects like Internet studies, environmental policy, labor studies and American studies.

The ecologically aware campus is hailed as 'environmentally friendly' by the National Wildlife Federation and one of the nation's top 50 'best values' in public education by Consumers Digest magazine.

Appalachian State actively fosters student research, encourages entrepreneurship, and coordinates more than 80 community outreach programs. Student volunteers give over 100,000 hours of service annually, broadening their own horizons while helping strengthen the economy of the region.

Appalachian State University encourages students to sharpen their writing skills, by offering writing courses. The university also offers a novel documentary service to encourage members of the Appalachian State community to create short documentary projects.

Admissions and Enrollment Overview

Appalachian State receives 15,000 applications annually for an undergraduate class of fewer than 2800. A recent class averaged SAT scores of 1163 and had a cumulative 3.87 GPA. 11 out of 12 underclassmen hail from North Carolina.

All freshmen and transfer students are admitted into University College to pursue a general education program, to sharpen their scholastic skills and gain exposure to a range of courses while learning to think critically and communicate effectively. Once students select a major they can transfer into the Appalachian State college appropriate for their chosen course of study.

Campus Facilities and Learning Environment

The Appalachian State campus has 19 academic buildings, 20 residence halls housing nearly 5,000 students and 29 residential fraternities and sororities. There are 200 student clubs and organizations, 20 varsity sports teams, 19 club sports and 19 intramural sports, each with three increasingly competitive levels.

The 165,000 square foot Belk Library is equipped with 360 public computer workstations, nearly a million books and bound periodicals and a half million electronic titles and subscriptions. It has five classrooms, seven multimedia rooms and 21 group study rooms.

For students who wish to escape to serene, natural surroundings, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest are mere minutes away.
