Web design is increasingly essential to every industry, with the Internet used more and more to conduct business. Those who enroll in a Web design online education program learn to create business-savvy graphics for the Web, written in a language for the Internet. By the time students complete the program, they will have an extensive portfolio of Web design work to show to potential employers.

Enrolling in a Web Design Online Education Program

Students looking to bring their creative savvy to digital media might consider a program in Web design. Offered at every secondary education level, Web design is a fast-growing field of growing importance to American industry looking to advertise on the Web. Students considering enrollment should have computer know-how, as well as the desire to bring information to life through creative means. They should also want to understand the business of marketing and wish to become lifelong learners because Web design programs, techniques and multimedia are always changing. Students only need high school diplomas or the equivalent to enroll in most online Web design education programs. Some online schools offer open admission. Usually, though, applying to an online program is similar to a campus program, requiring an application and an application essay.

Completing a Web Design Online Education Program

An online Web design program often includes a diverse curriculum, with both business and art courses taken through a chat room and e-mail correspondence with the professor and other students. Students can study and complete work on their own schedule, as well as through class discussion; the latter is accomplished through the use of a headset plugged into their personal home computer. Online programs may include a grade for participation. Tests are taken online and, often, timed using a computer program accompanying the textbook. All grades and comments are left for students on an online bulletin board where students can access comments and correspond with the professor.

Courses may include multimedia technologies, content management, digital publishing, color theory, career development and networking, project planning and Internet technologies. Students become familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP, Dreamweaver and JavaScript code writing. Students must also become familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Fireworks and Flash for Web animation. They learn to create layouts and various types of animation and enhance photographs while working in a computer-based language. They also learn about how the market works and the importance of keeping up with updates in the field. A Web design online program can be completed in one to four years, depending on level of degree and time devoted per semester by the student. At completion, the student should have a broad portfolio her or she can show to potential employers.
