Understanding the hydrodynamics and exchange processes of water is essential to the field of environmental engineering. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology requires graduate students studying Environmental Engineering to complete 'Water Quality Control,' a free OpenCourseWare. Using mathematical modeling, students will study flows, turbulence, discharge and diffusion patterns, gas and sediment exchange and tidal motion. This free online course is recommended for students in any graduate environmental engineering degree program.

Water Quality Control: Course Description

Dr. Eric Adams of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, has posted his complete lecture notes and assignments for students to use on OpenCourseWare. He presents several numerical models for understanding concentration and diffusion of contaminants in water, as well as other hydrodynamics and water quality metrics. Working with linear, planar and 3-D models, students will study static and turbulent advection and diffusion. Students will learn to apply these models to air and water pollution, rivers, estuaries, field tracer studies, reactor tanks and reservoirs. Consider the cycles of carbon, oxygen and nutrients and how they require clean, pure water. Students will also review several case studies related to water quality and learn which modeling techniques are most appropriate in a variety of real-world situations.

Readings, lecture notes, eight problem sets, a quiz and a final exam are available online. If you are interested in taking this free OpenCourseWare, visit the water quality control course page.
