The Peripheral Auditory System: Course Description

The phrase 'auditory periphery' describes the parts of the ear that receive sound waves and transmit hearing information to the brain. In 'The Peripheral Auditory System' OpenCourseWare by MIT, students will explore a wide range of subjects on the physiology of the auditory periphery and related causes of hearing loss and deafness. Specific structural topics covered in the course include the development and anatomy of the inner ear and the mechanical function of the cochlea. The course also addresses the many processes involved in sending information from the auditory periphery to the brain, including mechano-electric transduction by hair cells, cochlear amplification, otoacoustic emissions and synaptic transmission. Finally, students will synthesize this information to explore the causes of deafness and hearing loss, focusing on sensorineural hearing loss, which affects approximately 4,000 people per year in the United States, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, www.nidcd.nih.gov. This graduate-level course is taught by MIT Professors Joe Adams and Charlie Lieberman.

A list of suggested readings is offered on the course website, as well as related study questions and weekly problem sets. If you're interested in taking this free online course, visit the human auditory system course page.
