Social Theory and the City: Course Description

For many years, urban social theories focused on ease of movement and location. This OpenCourseWare from MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning focuses on the connection between a city's social life and architecture. Through materials provided MIT visiting Professor Richard Sennet's course in 2005, students study how architecture can influence positive social and economic change. 'Social Theory and the City' begins with a look at past social theories of cities and how they were influenced by economic and political trends. Then, through a series of readings, the graduate-level course analyzes how architecture and space within a city impacts the daily life of its residents.

Materials for this course include downloadable lecture notes and a bibliographic list of recommended readings. To take advantage of this free course, visit the social theories course page.
