Skin Care Professional Online Education Programs: Typical Course Curriculum
Skin care professionals understand how to illuminate each person's face through proper skin care analysis, cleansing techniques and cosmetic selection. Skin care professionals, a.k.a. estheticians, offer clients facial pampering with each visit. These professionals often hold a certificate in esthetics.
Esthetics Certificate Course Curriculum
Skin care professional education programs train students about the principles, techniques and customized analysis of skin care. Since many courses are taught in spa- or salon-style classroom settings, accredited online degree programs are not available. In order to obtain licensure, students must complete a certain number of clock hours of practical training, which is often included in the certificate program. Courses, therefore, often involve handling volunteer clients in order to blend classroom instruction with work-related, hands-on experience.
Most skin care education programs are offered at technical, career or community colleges. They prepare students to sit for state-mandated esthetician licensure examinations. A certificate program in skin care lasts approximately one year while an associate's degree program in cosmetology takes two years to complete. Upon graduation, skin care professionals may find employment in spas, salons, hotels and high-end cosmetic department stores. Courses may include:
- Facial fundamentals: Skin care professionals study techniques for providing facials.
- Skin care history: Students track the progress and technological advances in skin care.
- Sanitation and disinfection: Sanitation and disinfection techniques and state-of-the-art equipment are discussed in this course.
- Cosmetic hair removal: Students study the latest procedures for removing hair and make-up.
- Cosmetic chemistry: This course teaches students how to choose individualized skin care products for diverse clientele.
- Skin diseases and disorders: Skin care professionals learn how to diagnose and treat numerous skin diseases and disorders.
- Skin care management: Management strategies prepare skin care professionals to manage or run their own skin care business.
- Physiology of skin: Students learn the physiology of the face and facial massage techniques that benefit skin care.
