In New York City, a significant percentage of the population uses public transportation. In other major cities the number is significantly lower. This free OpenCourseWare provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s School of Engineering in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focuses on the growth of public transportation services over the last 25 years, the rebuilding of old systems, technological innovations and recent trends in the industry. Students discover the reasons for the low ridership, including low automobile costs, a trend towards suburban living and well-developed urban road systems. The course covers the changes needed to to draw in new riders, including safety, low costs and environmental health. Learn about the different systems available as forms of public transportation, operating costs and passenger capacity. MIT Professor Nigel Wilson teaches this course on public transportation services and planning transit operations, including the issues associated with each.
