Privacy Rights and the Law: Course Description

'Privacy Rights and the Law' is an introductory-level undergraduate course that examines the issue of privacy rights in the U.K., including how privacy rights are protected, the statutes that protect privacy rights, roles of common law and international law and the influence of the Human Rights Act of 1998. This course, which is being provided by The Open University's Law Department, begins with a discussion of the meaning of 'privacy rights,' a fluid phrase due to the various backgrounds and settings that are prevalent when attempting to characterize its significance. The course also takes a look at the effects of privacy rights on individuals, as well as other rights and interests that interact with an individual's right to privacy, such as the freedom of expression. Some of the other topics that the course covers include the right to confidence, which safeguards an individual's private information. At the completion of this unit, students should have the skills that include the ability to explain terms and concepts like 'privacy' and what a right to privacy entails. Students will not only understand how privacy is guarded in Britain and Wales, but also how this issue has been interpreted by the European Court of Human Rights.

The materials for this unit includes online units, a PDF file and access to various learning tools, including a discussion forum, learning journal and knowledge map. If you would like to take this course, visit the privacy rights course page.
