Photojournalism graduate degree programs are intended for students who want to complete an in-depth study of photojournalistic technique and history. Photojournalism master's degree and Ph.D. students must complete a thesis or dissertation project in order to earn the degree; in some schools, the thesis may consist of a photo essay or article. Many top schools in the country offer graduate programs for those interested in photojournalism, including Indiana University, New York University and Northwestern University.

Master of Arts in Photojournalism

Master of Arts in Photojournalism degree programs educate students on the theories and skills needed for the field. Students in a graduate photojournalism degree program must fulfill core courses in topics related to photojournalism and the media. In addition to taking classes on journalism in general, students will take field-specific classes on photojournalism techniques, history of the field, photo desk management and the photographic essay. In addition to taking required program courses, students must develop and complete a thesis project based on a theme of their choosing.

Ph.D. in Photojournalism

Ph.D. in photojournalism degree programs are rare; it's more common to find Ph.D. programs in mass communication or journalism. Ph.D. programs in photojournalism will qualify graduates to teach at the university level. Before graduating, students must complete dissertation projects on topics of their choice. The dissertation process involves a great deal of research and should be completed with the intent of publication. Many Ph.D. programs focus on the history and theories of photojournalism rather than the applications of it.
