Online Masters Degree in School Counseling: Requirements

Master's degrees in school counseling are offered online through several reputable institutions. These programs usually offer the same course of study as a traditional on-campus program, but allow more flexibility for students completing them. This article discusses the requirements for enrolling in and completing a master's degree in School Counseling.

Enrolling in a Master's in School Counseling Degree Program

Students may find increasing opportunities to earn graduate degrees in school counseling, such as a Master of Education in school counseling, through online programs. Some programs are entirely online; however, most require practical experience gained in an educational institution. A few programs require a portion to be completed on-campus. Master's degree programs in school counseling usually have specific admission requirements.

Most require a bachelor's degree and previous coursework in the social sciences. Many programs have minimum grade point requirements, such as 3.0 cumulative for all undergraduate coursework. Since many programs have competitive admissions processes, they rely on factors, such as references, personal statements of intent, interviews, prior experience or volunteer work and GRE or MAT exam results. Online courses require students have optimal access to the Internet.

Completing a Master's in School Counseling Degree Program

Most online master's degree programs in school counseling require approximately 60 hours of core coursework. Coursework might include counseling theory, group counseling, academic and career planning, intervention, program development, legal and ethical issues, abnormal psychology, research and evaluation methods, school law and diversity issues. Students are usually required to maintain a minimum grade point average.

In addition to the online coursework, students usually participate in a practicum or internship program. These usually take place at a local school under the supervision of a licensed counselor or instructor. This practicum provides students with essential real-world experience. Some programs require students to participate in some on-campus training as well.
