Several schools now offer online computer technician degrees at the associate's, bachelor's and master's degree levels. Each of these degree programs prepare graduates for careers in information technology at various levels and with varying degrees of responsibility.

Online Computer Technician Associate's Degree Curriculum

An associate's degree in online computer technology often comes in the form of a computer network operations degree or a computer specialist degree. Both degree programs can lead to careers as computer technicians. Graduates of online computer technician associate's degree programs can work for business information technology departments and computer repair shops. Students will use their school's website, as well as online communication programs, such as Blackboard, to communicate with professors and fellow students. Associate's degree programs are often two years in length and consist of 60 credits hours that can be transferred to bachelor's degree programs. Classes may include computer troubleshooting, wireless networking, operating systems, firewalls, server administration, microcomputer hardware and systems support.

Online Computer Technician Bachelor's Degree Curriculum

Online bachelor's degree programs for computer technicians are often referred to as computer information systems or information technology degrees. This online program consists of 120 credits, including general education courses and electives that may be unrelated to computer technology. At the end of the program, students will be able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair computer systems. In addition graduates should have more advanced skills, such as maintaining databases, launching online businesses, forensic information gathering and networking multiple computers. Possible career choices include computer security specialist, network administrator and analyst, computer support technician, computer systems administrator and data communications analyst. During the bachelor's degree program, students may pursue industry certifications, such as the A+ certification and the Network+ certification.

Online Computer Technician Master's Degree Curriculum

Several schools now offer online master's degree programs in information technology. Most online programs require 30 credits and can be completed in 1-2 years. Within information technology, students must complete information security courses, networking courses, software development courses, business information courses and decision support courses. An online master's degree program in information technology is perfect for a computer repair technician who's looking for more responsibility and pay within their information technology career. It's also a great stepping stone for someone looking to start his or her own information technology business.
