Ocean Systems Design OpenCourseWare: A Free Online Bachelor Level Course by MIT on Ocean System Design
In 'Design of Ocean Systems,' students continue studying the topics introduced in the 'Design of Systems Operating in Random Environments' OpenCourseWare. Both courses are made available as OpenCourseWare by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Department of Mechanical Engineering. 'Design of Ocean Systems' further explores ocean engineering topics and provides students with the knowledge needed to understand and interpret data collected in the field and in the lab. This course is recommended for undergraduate students earning a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Design of Ocean Systems: Course Description
Professor Chryssostomos Chryssostomidis and Dr. Franz Hover developed the course materials for the 'Design of Ocean Systems' OpenCourseWare, which explores concepts of ocean engineering and ocean systems design in greater depth. This course picks up where the 'Design of Systems Operating in Random Environments' OpenCourseWare left off. Therefore, it is recommended that students first study those course materials before exploring 'Design of Ocean Systems.' Lecture notes and assignments cover a variety of marine engineering topics, including the basic physics of underwater acoustics, feedback control, marine system power sources and hydrodynamics principles for rigid bodies in hydrodynamic flight. The undergraduate-level course materials will benefit Mechanical Engineering students interested in ocean systems design and careers in marine and ocean engineering
The free OpenCourseWare includes lecture notes and assignments. For more information, and to download the course materials, visit the ocean systems design course page.
