Nanomechanics of Materials and Biomaterials: Course Description
Nanomechanics deals with forces and motion of unimaginably small man-made and biological structures and materials. The field itself is relatively young; as such, many discoveries are being made all the time. This course examines the latest discoveries and developments in the field. Specific topics include biocompatibility and nanomechanics, the EDL (electrical double layer), molecular surface interactions, HRFS (high resolution force spectroscopy), nanoindentation theory, imaging with the AFM (atomic force microscope) and interparticle potentials and colloids among other topics. Knowledge of differential equations and material mechanics is recommended prior to taking this course. The course is designed for Materials Science and Engineering students, but students from fields such as chemistry and biology may benefit. The actual undergraduate MIT course is taught by Professor Christine Ortiz in a lecture and recitation-style format.
This OpenCourseWare includes course readings, lecture notes, course videos, simulations, assignments and solutions, exams and additional course materials. If you're interested in taking this free course, visit the material and biomaterial nanomechanics course page.
