Literary Studies: The Legacy of England: Course Description

MIT's 'Literary Studies: The Legacy of England' introduces students to British culture and comedy through a historical survey of English literature. The course covers a variety of literary genres throughout history, including Medieval riddles and character sketches, Renaissance lyrics and theater, 18th century satirical tales, 19th century ironic novels and contemporary stories and film. Throughout the course, a special emphasis is placed on the unique nuances of British humor in the texts. Literary and comedic themes discussed in the course include the social comedy of manners, humanism and wit and romanticism and aesthetics. Students who take this course read and analyze the writings of many influential English authors, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Lewis Carroll, Arthur Conan Doyle, Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. This undergraduate-level course is taught by MIT Professor Stephen Tapscott.
