Large Scale Flow Dynamics Lab: Course Description

The study of flow dynamics is integral to the process of understanding, recognizing and predicting weather systems and natural occurrences, such as hurricanes and tsunamis. This graduate-level lab course will put to practice students' knowledge of topics such as geostrophic adjustment, quasi-geostrophic balance and Rossby and frontal waves. Professor Glenn Flierl and Dr. Lodovica Illari will provide the lab instructions that students can work through at their own pace. Additionally, this OpenCourseWare also features project options for each of the key topics. Students can download the projects and do as many as they wish. Six project assignments are available for download. A preparatory study for this course can be found within MIT's OpenCourseWare, 'Fluid Dynamics of the Atmosphere and Ocean,' which is also offered at the graduate-level.

Lab instructions and projects are available online for free download. For more information on this OpenCourseWare, visit the large scale flow dynamics lab course home page.
