Laboratory on the Physiology, Acoustics and Perception of Speech: Course Description

MIT's 'Laboratory on the Physiology, Acoustics and Perception of Speech' OpenCourseWare features a variety of speech processes that students will research and study in-depth during lab exercises. Students will learn about the Speech Chain, speech movements and speech perception. The free course is taught by MIT instructors, including Dr. Stefanie Shattuck-Hufnagel, Dr. Joseph Perkell and Professor Kenneth Stevens. The instructors will discuss models of speech recognition, speech disorders and development, speech patterns, spectral analysis of speech and computer-aided waveform analysis. Students can use Klatt Speech Analysis software to work on speech samples or use MATLAB software. The OpenCourseWare is geared toward graduate students who want to do their graduate research in the Speech and Hearing field. The original MIT course consists of lab reports, a short term paper and lecture and twice-weekly lab sessions.

The free online OpenCourseWare includes a reading list, lab exercises, a lab database and study materials. If you are interested in taking this OpenCourseWare, visit the speech perception lab course page.
