Journalism degree programs are offered at many colleges and universities, some with selective enrollment programs and others with open enrollment. Programs are most commonly offered at the bachelor's and master's degree level. Read on for information on enrolling in and completing a Journalism degree program.

Enrolling in a Journalism Degree Program

Enrollment requirements for Journalism degree programs vary by school. Some schools have basic entry requirements with no additional requirements for the Journalism program. Colleges usually recommend four full years of English courses. Advanced courses and extra-curricular activities may be considered. Other schools have selective enrollment programs requiring certain coursework and standards. In these situations, students may enter pre-Journalism or general education programs until their acceptance into the Journalism program. Competition for enrollment in Journalism graduate programs varies by institution, and some are extremely selective. Students might be required to submit letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a writing sample in addition to meeting academic standards.

Completing a Journalism Degree Program

Bachelor's degree programs in Journalism typically require a set number of hours of major coursework in addition to general education requirements. Journalism topics include the history and psychology of communications, multi-media, reporting, writing, legal and ethical issues in Journalism and the communication industry. Students might be required to contribute to school publications or participate in internship programs. In order to graduate, students might be expected to maintain a set grade point average for the required courses. Graduate students may also need to complete a thesis or special project.
