Introduction to Technology and Cities: Course Description

The use of information and communication technologies, or ICTs, has become such an ingrained part of everyday life that it affects how communities develop and interact. This online OpenCourseWare offered by MIT in Cambridge explores the impact of the Internet, cell phones and other modern communication tools on social relationships and urban planning. Professor Joseph Ferreira, Jr. taught students about the effects of technology on both the citizen and government sides of city operation and growth. Early lessons examine changes in neighborhood use patterns and the rise of virtual communities. Later, the course looks at e-government and asks how digital communication can improve citizen engagement in government. This course can be beneficial to students seeking a master's degree in urban studies or community planning.
