Introduction to Lie Groups: Course Description

'Introduction to Lie Groups' is a free course provided by the MIT Department of Mathematics and taught by Professor Sigurdur Helgason. Prerequisites for the course include introductory classes in analysis and metric spaces, linear algebra and calculus in several variables. The initial lecture commences with a historical overview of Lie Groups and a study of Lie theory. In subsequent lectures Professor Helgason develops students' understanding of Lie Groups by covering a variety of advanced mathematical topics, including manifold theory, complex manifolds, Riemannian geometry and the definition of Lie Groups. The instructor also delivers a comprehensive review of Lie subgroups, Lie subalgebra and their relationship to exponential mapping.

The materials for this course includes lecture notes, assignments and a reading list that can be downloaded on your computer. If you are interested in taking this course, visit the introduction to lie groups course page.
