Although innovation isn't usually a process associated with formulas, recent research has shown that even revolutionary product development can be approached systematically. In MIT's 'How to Develop Breakthrough Products and Services,' Business students are introduced to simple and effective methodologies for keeping their companies ahead of the competition. Many strategies covered in the course focus on using clients as resources: in the lead user method, manufacturers can gain insight from the ideas and desires of customers or from the use of ethnographic studies to build products around customers' needs.
