This OpenCourseWare from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology traces the growth of the western intellectual tradition from the fall of the Roman Empire through the Middle Ages. The course posits that the rise of Christianity was not inevitable.Besides Christian thought and practice, the class also focuses on the challengers to Christianity. Topics include Nordic paganism, Byzantine orthodoxy, the rise of Islam and Jews in European society. MIT Professor Anne McCants teaches this free undergraduate History course.
