Globalization has become a buzzword, but what does it mean to policy makers who must deal with the changing global economy on a daily basis? 'Globalization' is a free OpenCourseWare, counterpart to an on-campus course in the undergraduate Political Science degree program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Globalization Course Description

Free trade, in which governments agree to reduce or eliminate tariffs on imports, is blamed by many for the loss of jobs in the United States. 'Globalization' explores how a changing global economy influences economic factors such as wages, levels of production and the pace of innovation. On the MIT campus, this lecture course was taught by Professor Suzanne Berger, who provides OpenCourseWare students with an extensive reading list and reading questions for self-directed study. 'Globalization' challenges students to consider whether globalization is truly a new phenomenon and if it can be reversed; students also assess the role globalization plays in the relationship between the developing world and industrialized societies. Of special concern is the effect of globalization on the state of democracy in the world. Students taking this course are strongly recommended to have prior exposure to Political Science or economics coursework. Although 'Globalization' is part of the undergraduate curriculum for the Political Science program at MIT, the course content is also suitable for graduate students.

Provided for this OpenCourseWare are essay assignments and a reading list with accompanying study questions. If you have an interest in this topic, visit the globalization course page.
