If you dream of joining the food service industry, you may consider pursuing a food service certificate or degree. A certificate program leads to training or junior management positions, while an associate's degree can prepare you for upper management positions. Certificate in Food Service Management

Many Food Service management certificates can be completed in less than 12 months, but some may take longer. This certificate leads to entry-level or intermediate positions at resorts, lodging facilities and restaurants, such as maitre'd, training coordinator, dining room manager or customer service specialist. Coursework includes classes on customer service, sanitation, employee training, marketing, wine basics and beverage management.

Associate of Applied Science in Food Service Management

An A.A.S. in Food Service Management helps students develop necessary skills for managerial careers in food service. This includes jobs as cooks, assistant kitchen managers, food and beverage managers, line chefs and bakers. The curriculum includes classes in culinary arts, food preparation, food service sanitation, nutrition, menu planning, food and beverage control, food purchasing and food service management. An internship is sometimes required as part of the program. This Food Service degree program lasts approximately two years.
